Every year, thousands of candidates visit the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to check whether they have been offered admission into their preferred university, polytechnic, or college of education.

For many candidates, checking JAMB CAPS is an exciting moment. Some are hoping to see the long-awaited “Congratulations, you have been offered admission” message, while others are patiently waiting for their admission status to change.

However, imagine logging into your account, clicking on the admission status section and suddenly seeing this error message:

“JAMB: The request failed with HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized.”

Naturally, you may begin to worry. Does this mean your admission has been rejected? Is there a problem with your JAMB profile? Or is the CAPS portal experiencing a technical issue?

If you have encountered this error while checking your admission status, there is no need to panic immediately. In this article, we explain what the JAMB CAPS 401 Unauthorized error means, why it may appear, how to fix it and what candidates should do next.

What Does JAMB CAPS HTTP Status 401 Unauthorized Mean?

The HTTP Status 401 Unauthorized error is a technical message indicating that a website or online service has not accepted the authentication information accompanying a request.

In simple terms, the JAMB CAPS system may be unable to verify your current login session or authorize the request you are trying to make.

This error can sometimes occur when your login session has expired, your browser has stored outdated information, or the portal is experiencing a temporary technical problem.

However, it is important to understand that seeing the JAMB CAPS 401 Unauthorized error does not automatically mean you have been denied admission.

The error itself does not tell you whether your admission has been approved, rejected or is still being processed. You need to access your official CAPS account successfully to confirm your actual admission status.

Why Am I Seeing the JAMB CAPS 401 Unauthorized Error?

Although the exact cause cannot be determined from the error message alone, several factors may explain why it appears when you check your JAMB admission status.

1. Your JAMB Login Session May Have Expired

One possible reason is that your login session has expired. This can happen when you leave your account open for a long time without activity or navigate through the portal after your session has ended.

When this happens, CAPS may no longer recognize the request you are making.

What to do: Log out of your JAMB profile, close the browser tab, open the official portal again and sign in afresh.

2. The JAMB CAPS Portal May Be Experiencing a Technical Issue

Online platforms sometimes experience temporary service interruptions, particularly during busy admission periods when many candidates are trying to check their results or admission status.

If the problem originates from the website or its authentication service, you may continue seeing the same error even when your login details are correct.

What to do: Wait for some time before trying again. If the error continues, check JAMB's official website or support channels for updates.

3. Your Browser May Have Stored Outdated Cookies or Cache

Your browser stores certain website information to help pages load more quickly. Sometimes, outdated cookies or cached data can interfere with a website's login session.

This may prevent you from accessing certain parts of the CAPS portal correctly.

What to do: Clear your browser's cache and cookies, reopen the official JAMB portal and log in again. Be aware that clearing cookies may sign you out of other websites.

Alternatively, try opening the portal in an incognito or private browsing window.

4. You May Be Using an Old or Incorrect Portal Link

Another possibility is that you are accessing CAPS through an outdated, incomplete or unofficial link.

Using the correct website helps you avoid unnecessary login problems and reduces the risk of exposing your personal information to fraudulent websites.

What to do: Navigate to the official JAMB website at https://www.jamb.gov.ng/ and follow its CAPS or admission-status links. You can also access the official CAPS portal at https://caps.jamb.gov.ng/.

Always check the website address before entering your JAMB login details.

5. Your Login or Authentication Details May Not Be Accepted

Sometimes, an authentication problem can occur because the website cannot properly validate the current session or the information accompanying your request.

Although a 401 error is associated with authentication, it does not necessarily mean that your JAMB password is wrong. The cause could also be related to the browser session or the website itself.

What to do: Sign in again through the official portal. If you cannot access your account after several attempts, use JAMB's official support channels rather than repeatedly submitting your details.

How to Fix JAMB CAPS 401 Unauthorized Error Step by Step

If you are currently seeing the message “The request failed with HTTP Status 401: Unauthorized,” follow these steps in order.

Step 1: Close the CAPS page.

Close the page displaying the error and return to your browser's main window.

Step 2: Open the official JAMB website.

Visit https://www.jamb.gov.ng/ and navigate to the appropriate CAPS or admission-status service.

Step 3: Log in again.

Enter the required details through the official login page and make sure you are using the correct account information.

Step 4: Try a private browsing window.

If the error persists, open an incognito window in Chrome or a private window in your preferred browser. Visit the official portal and try again.

Step 5: Switch your internet connection if possible.

If you are using mobile data, try a reliable Wi-Fi connection, or vice versa. This will help you determine whether the problem may be related to your current connection, although it will not fix a server-side authentication problem.

Step 6: Wait and try again.

If the same error continues, give the system some time before attempting to log in again. Avoid repeatedly refreshing the page without allowing the session to reset.

Step 7: Contact JAMB support if necessary.

If the problem persists, visit the official JAMB support website at https://support.jamb.gov.ng/ and follow the available guidance for reporting your issue.

You can explain that you are trying to check your admission status on CAPS but keep receiving the HTTP 401 Unauthorized error.

Does the JAMB CAPS 401 Error Mean I Have Not Been Given Admission?

No. The HTTP 401 Unauthorized message does not, by itself, mean that you have not been offered admission.

It is a technical error rather than an official admission decision.

For example, two candidates may encounter the same error even though their admission statuses are different. One candidate may already have received an admission offer, while another may still be waiting for an update.

Until you can access your admission status, you cannot determine your admission outcome from the error message alone.

Therefore, do not assume that your admission has been rejected simply because CAPS is not opening correctly. Resolve the access problem first, then check the status displayed on your account.

Understanding the Different JAMB CAPS Admission Statuses

Once you successfully access your account, you may see one of several admission-related messages.

Understanding these messages can help you know what to do next.

1. Admitted

If your CAPS status displays “Admitted,” it means JAMB has approved your admission offer.

Follow the instructions displayed on your account to accept or reject the offer, as applicable. After accepting your admission, complete any remaining official requirements and follow your institution's instructions.

2. Admission in Progress

If your status shows “Admission in Progress,” your admission is still undergoing the necessary processing or approval stages.

This may mean your institution has proposed or recommended you for admission, but the process has not yet been completed.

It is encouraging to see progress, but it is not a guarantee of admission. Continue checking your CAPS account for updates.

3. Not Admitted

If your CAPS status displays “Not Admitted,” it means you have not yet been offered admission at the time you check.

However, this does not necessarily mean you will never be admitted. Your status may change as the admission process continues, depending on your eligibility and the institution's admission decisions.

Keep checking your account and confirm that you have satisfied the relevant admission requirements.

4. Admission Status Not Showing or Page Not Opening

If the admission page refuses to load, displays a blank screen or returns an HTTP 401 error, you may be dealing with an access or technical issue.

Do not confuse a page-loading error with an official admission status. Try the troubleshooting steps explained above before drawing conclusions.

What Should Candidates Do While Waiting for JAMB Admission?

While waiting for an admission update, candidates should take a few practical steps to avoid missing important information.

Check CAPS regularly: Your admission status may change as institutions process their admission lists.
Confirm your O'Level results: Make sure the required results have been uploaded to your JAMB profile and are correctly reflected.
Monitor your institution's admission updates: Follow announcements published through the institution's official website and verified communication channels.
Check your course and institution details: Confirm that your application information is correct and review any applicable admission requirements.
Respond to an admission offer promptly: If JAMB offers you admission, follow the official instructions for accepting or rejecting it.
Avoid unofficial admission claims: Do not pay anyone who promises to manipulate your admission status or guarantee an offer.

Most importantly, remain patient. Admission processing can take time, and a delay in seeing an update does not automatically mean that you have lost your chance.

Frequently Asked Questions About JAMB CAPS 401 Unauthorized Error

Can I still gain admission if I see a 401 error on JAMB CAPS?

Yes, it is possible. The error does not determine your admission outcome. You need to access your account successfully to confirm whether you have been offered admission.
